Hanzehogeschool Groningen is a university of applied sciences. It focuses on ‘delivering’ graduates able to function well in their future work environment – concerning skills and knowledge related to their (future) profession as such, as well as personal and communicative skills necessary to work at higher professional levels in general.
In 2017, the institution had 27.886 students and 3.280 staff. It offers more than 70 four-year Bachelor courses and an increasing number of Master courses covering almost all sectors of Dutch education in applied sciences: Business and Management, Communication and Information Technology, Engineering and Technology, Social Studies, Health Studies, Education, Sports Studies, Fine Arts, Dance and Music.
The institution is a front runner in the Netherlands concerning staff development in relation to internationalization. It has developed a competences matrix for (teaching) staff in international perspective: which competences are needed to teach in an international learning environment, and training courses for staff in this field have been developed.
Hanzehogeschool also has an Intercultural Learning Lab, where (teaching) staff work on their intercultural competences and awareness. Training staff are formally licensed to offer such training.
